Bouncing Back from a Setback

Despite our best intentions sometimes we suffer setbacks. Identifying what is causing your hair to ''misbehave" is key, as it will assist you in finding solutions.

Here are a few reasons why your hair might "suddenly act up".

NEW PRODUCTS
There is a new product on the market, your favorite blogger has tried it and she thinks it's the next BIG THING in hair-care. You buy it, after two uses your hair starts shedding excessively.

SOLUTION - STOP using the product immediately

Possible  reasons it didn't work
1. You might be sensitive to certain ingredients in the product.
2. The product is not for your particular hair type e.g products with butters might be too heavy for finer and looser curl patterns
3. You used the product incorrectly and didn't follow the manufacturers instructions, in this case try the product again if it doesn't work then it is reason 1 or 2

HEAT DAMAGE
Those slick hairstyles became extremely appealing especially since it was winter, it was cold and walking around or going to bed with wet hair just wasn't appealing.

SOLUTION - Always use a heat protectant. Do not use products that contain petroleum or butters when you flat iron as these tend to "fry" your hair.  You cannot reverse heat damage so you are going to have to grow out those damaged ends.

DAMAGE FROM A PROTECTIVE STYLE
You cannot keep a protective style on for longer than eight weeks and even then that is pushing it. You WILL cause  damage to your hair line and your hair will be extremely knotted.

SOLUTION - Don't keep your hair in a single protective style like braids or weaves for longer than 8 weeks, ensure that you moisturize your hair whilst it is in it's protective style.

SCALP IRRITATION
Untreated braiding hair, change in products, chemical treatments, "basing" the scalp with products that contain mineral oil and petroleum, not washing your hair whilst it is in its protective style, restrictive diets and illness can cause your scalp to be irritated.

SOLUTION - if your irritation is not due to illness or the use of medication such as antibiotics, then it is really quite simple STOP putting rubbish on your scalp and eat healthy and drink lots of water.

SENSITIZED HAIR
You have to wait at least 6 - 8 weeks before getting another relaxer treatment on your hair, not waiting long enough can cause your hair to be over processed as the re-growth on your hair will not be long enough and it is possible to overlap the relaxer on already relaxed hair.

MECHANICAL DAMAGE
Never ever do your hair when you are in a hurry because you will damage your hair. When you are in a hurry you tend to brush or comb to fast, this means you are literally "pulling your hair out" I find doing my hair quite therapeutic and I like spending that time with myself.

STRESS
Life is far too short and far to precious to stress about anything. Go for a massage and have a Kit Kat.

Remember if you suddenly experience any hair loss and there is no reason for the loss then it is prudent to see your doctor as they are the only ones qualified to diagnose medical condition, and prescribe medication.
