It's always very difficult for me to review a local product as I want to like it so much, because it would mean we add yet another local product to the list of great products to use. Unfortunately, I did not enjoy the whole True Curls Range.
Conditioner (R130)
I found the fragrance of the conditioner to be extremely over-powering that I could not keep it in my hair for longer than 30 minutes. I like my conditioners to have slip as it makes it easier for me to de-tangle my hair and this conditioner did not have the right amount of slip for me, and since I had issue with the fragrance I thought it best not to use it as a leave in conditioner. For my hair I felt that the conditioner did not work as it left my hair feeling a bit greasy, also it made my hair really heavy that it did not hold a twist-out, my hair just went puffy.
Curl Defining Pudding(R95)
The True Curls Defining Pudding was not a pudding and it did not define my curls, it is a very good smooth Shea butter Mix - I have had issues with the names of True Curls products as to me a pudding is a custard and it is something that is water based and not a butter - the Curling Defining Pudding for me smelt absolutely horrific, I really did not like the smell of this products it has a strong over powering fragrance. It is such a shame as it has a nice smooth consistency and does a great job in sealing my hair and a little of this goes a long way, so it is real value for money. Maar I couldn't get past the smell.
Intense Moisture Cream(80)
The True Curls Intense Moisture Cream, is not a moisturizer in the true sense of the word moisturizer as it does not contain any water. I found this product to be a good sealant used with LOC or LCO. On it's own it did not moisturize my hair but used with a the True Curls Moisture Boost Daily Spritz it did a good job of sealing in the moisture. The smell of this product is bearable but do not go into the sun straight after using it as you will really start to smell, of essential oils and these are not the pleasant smelling oils.
Moisture Boost Daily Spritz(60)
The True Curls Moisture Boost Spritz was the star of the range for me, it made my hair soft and bouncy. However, the ingredients list is not on the bottle and I really like to know what is going on my hair be it good or bad so I can make the choice to use it or not. The fragrance is pleasant and it really does give you hair that boost of moisture even when you are wearing mini twist it brings them to life.
What do I think?
I think that True Curls is on the right track. A bit of tweaking here and there especially with the fragrances would make a world of difference for me. I also expected the products to do something with my curls given their name but I found that none of they products actually defined my curls, but rather they weighed down my hair. I think for winter these products would be good for sealing and protecting the hair from the harsh cold but in summer they weigh down the hair quite a lot.
Value for money
I draw the line on paying R60 for a spritz that is mainly water, for me something has gone wrong when we start paying so much money for water and oil when there is hundreds of recipes on the internet for spritz recipes. I know this will make me very unpopular with certain manufacturers in Mzansi but really have we started charging people so much money for water. The other day I got a sent a link for some new products someone wanted me to try and I saw that they were making FLAX SEED GEL and selling it to people, I mean honestly FLAX SEED GEL I first saw the recipe on you tube 7 years ago and I could not believe how easy it was to make it and now someone is selling it. I don't know I am probably wired differently and I will probably never be rich, but something has gone horribly wrong when people start selling us things they did not formulate but rather copied off the internet and changed a few ingredients. Printing a label and putting my name on it does not make +Naptural85 flax seed gel recipe mine. But, I have strayed a little off topic this is a product review and not a lecture to manufacturers in Mzansi to get creative.
Would I buy True Curls products again? If the fragrances remain the same, not a chance. BUT remember that these are my opinions and how the products made my hair feel, you must always form your own opinions about products, don't let bloggers tell you what you can and cannot use. Go out and try these products for yourself you might actually find that you like them.
