How to Soften your Hair

Achieving manageability on coarse natural hair is easier than you think.  If you go back to the basics of caring for your hair with products that work together. Manageability is the sum of all the things you do and add to your hair.

Steps to softening your hair.

1.       Cleanse your hair with a good sulphate free shampoo that will remove dirt and build-up. If your hair is not properly cleansed any products that you add after wards will not effectively absorb into your hair.

2.       Use a conditioner, this is an important step. Ingredients such as Cetearyl or Cetyl are fatty acids that are part of the ingredients in conditioners that soften hair. Most conditioners are Acidic and this restores the hair’s PH to 4.5 this is where hair is most happy. The acidic composition of conditioners help to close the hair cuticle so that it retains moisture and other nutrients.

3.       Deep Condition your hair at least once a week. Treatments and Masks have more concentrated ingredients that can penetrate easily, temporarily repairing hair that is damaged. The molecules in the ingredients attach themselves to damaged areas of your hair. Giving your hair shine, elasticity and increasing moisture retention.

4.       Leave-in conditioners, make a big difference to your hair’s manageability especially after washing your hair.  Leave-in conditioners are formulated with all the ingredients you need to lock in moisture they contain, water, conditioning and softening agents and oils. After washing and deep conditioning this is pretty much all you need to seal in all that goodness.

5.       Moisturising your hair in-between wash days is crucial, moisturised hair means soft manageable hair. Choose either a moisturiser, hair lotion or cream styler’s these work very well to moisturise your hair. I recommend you moisturise your hair twice a week.

Sealing with a good oil or butter is a good way to ensure that your hair retains moisture but be careful when using heavy oils. Consistency is very important to achieving the moisture levels that are required to keep your hair soft, it is not necessary to over manipulate your hair every day with complicated methods.
