Rules rules and more rules! There are so many Natural Hair Rules it seems like everyday I discover a new one I never knew about before. Rules are important and are there to guide us, BUT sometimes you need to question why you are doing things. I have broken a lot of the rules and guess what my still hair thrives.
Here are some of the rules I have broken but yet my hair still thrives
1. Pre-Pooing - I never saw the point of it. I do understand why people started pre-pooing back in the day, this was because there was no sulfate free shampoo's. Products available to naturals were stripping and pre-pooing helped to protect your hair, however most brands available in Mzansi have a sulfate free shampoo.
2. You cannot be natural if you Dye your hair - granted certain dyes may alter your curl pattern but heck I love color and I have dyed my hair with great success using box dyes and professional dyes. It is all in the way you look after your hair after you have dyed your hair.
3. Naturals MUST use oils such as Olive Oil, Coconut Oil, JBCO and Shea Butters on their hair - These particular oils applied directly to my hair dry out my hair, the Shea Butter I did for the longest time till I discovered moisturizing butters which actually cut out the need for LOC or LCO method.
4. Naturals MUST have a spray bottle to spritz their hair - I would religiously mix my spray every week and spray my hair every night. Did it benefit me? Absolutely not, even when I didn't spray my hair every night it still grew. You do not need to moisturize your hair every single night, as long as I conditioned and and sealed my moisture in correctly at the time of washing this step was completely unnecessary.
5. HEAT is the devil do not use it - I use heat on my hair consistently, of course I protect my hair with a good heat protectant. There was a few months I wore my hair straight because I felt like it, I did not suffer from heat damage neither did my hair break.
6. Naturals must NEVER USE Silicons - Not all silicons are bad, moderation is key with everything. With many naturals opting to skip the shampoo silicons will build up and clog up the hair this is why it is important to clarify your hair every once in a while to remove buildup.
7. NEVER EVER USE mineral oils and petroleum - some of my best products contain mineral oils and petroleum.
8. NEVER use a comb - do you know what would happen to my hair if I didn't comb it? I am all for finger de-tangling to get most of the knots out but I am must have my comb to make sure I work out all the knots and work my products into my hair.
9. ONLY use natural ingredients in your hair like Avocado's eggs, bananas etc - I prefer products I feel they penetrate my hair shaft better than food. I like to eat my food.
10. For your hair to grow it must be in protective styling - Unfortunately I can only maintain a protective style for 2 weeks and it is really not my thing, my hair grew despite the fact I did not always have it braided.
Remember all hair is different and you need to figure out what your hair needs if following all the rules helps you then go ahead girl rock on. Most importantly not all things work for everyone so you must decide what works for you and your lifestyle.
