The hair on the Nape area is just as fragile as the hair on your hairline and you need to take great care of it so that you don't look like you have an undercut. When my hair was relaxed this was one of my biggest challenges!
The main causes of Nape Hair Breakage are:
Tight Head bands - I know how great natural hair looks in a big beautiful PUFF, however if this is your constant style of choice be careful of the head bands you are using. The elastic bands can snag and pull on hair whilst the sheer tights (stockings) can actually cut hair strands giving you that "under-cut"look!
Constant Manipulation - A nice sleek ponytail or "iPondo" is a great way to style relaxed hair, it can last for up to two weeks, which is great especially if you don't have time to do your hair every day. However my obsession with sleek edges started to affect my hair and it started to snap right by the edge of my nape area.
Tight Satin Bonnet/Doeks - there is nothing worse than sleeping with a tight satin bonnet or doek! The pressure exerted on both the hairline and nape area is completely not worth waking up with flat looking hair. If your bonnet is tight loosen the elastic and don't tie you doek too tight. Be careful of your woolen or pashmina scarves as well, as this material can easily snag and break hair rather wear them away from your hair or put your hair up when wearing them.
Excessive protective styling - you need to take a break in between protective styling at least a minimum of two weeks in between styles, this gives your hair and scalp time to relax and breath! Also when styling your braids into things like buns do not pull too tight either.
Excessive use of chemicals - if you are going to relax your hair, I strongly recommend you have it done at a salon with a trained professional. I believe it is safer and will minimize excessive use of chemicals, similarly if you are going to bleach your hair rather do it in a salon. If you are adventurous and like to use box dyes at home follow the manufactures instructions, and wait at least 6 weeks before re-coloring.
Remember moderation is key, and if a hairstyle is too tight, doesn't feel right or your scalp is irritated take it down it is not worth the pain and it will probably damage your hair.
