Natural Hair Rules

As a Hairstylist, I am privileged to meet a lot of people. The most common concern from my clients is that they are not following “the rules of natural hair ”! I hate to break it to you but there are NO Rules to looking after Natural hair. Make your own rules! Yes of course, there are basics Wash, Condition and Moisturize but that is across ALL hair types.

Rule #890 NEVER USE COMBS
If you do not properly de-tangle your hair, a comb, de-tangling brush or even your fingers will break your hair. It’s not that you are using equipment to do the job it is how you use the equipment that matters. There are 5 very easy steps to de-tangling:
  1.       Lightly mist your hair with water
  2.       Start by de-tangling the hair with your fingers working from the ends to the roots
  3.       Add your favorite de-tangling leave-in conditioner
  4.       Now use your brush or comb and start working from the ends to the roots this will help you distribute the product evenly and get rid of all the knots
  5.       Style and enjoy

Rule #720 NEVER EVER USE HEAT
If you use excessive heat on ANY hair type it will get damaged!  Heat is never to blame, it’s the way we use it.  If you press your hair every day with a flat iron that will damage your hair.  All hair burns at temperatures over 230 degrees Celsius. Excessive use of heat combined with non-effective heat protectants will cause damage. Coconut oil is not a heat protectant, you need products that contain ingredients that will protect your hair.

RULE #450 YOU MUST DO THE LOC OR LCO METHOD
A lot of products that you are using for the LOC or LCO method already contain the ingredients that you are going to be layering on your hair. A good leave-in conditioner or moisturizer contains:

1. Water
2. Softening Agents
3. Oils or Butters.

So, if your product “does it all in one mum” why must you do the LOC or LCO method. Whichever way you choose to moisturize your hair if it’s one product, or indeed the famous methods you must remember that only water moisturizes your hair so it is important that your process involves products containing water.

As always if something works for you don’t change it, “if it ain't broke don’t fix it” but always remember there are no hard and fast rules to anything, it is all about what it works for you and your hair. The most important thing to remember is to enjoy your hair!

What are some of the rules you have found? Please share them in the comments below. Also, if you found this post helpful don’t forget to share it with your friends.
