How to Keep your Hair Moisturized

The most important thing about HAIR is that you need to understand what it needs, touch and feel your hair, it will tell you when it is unhappy.  Remember as well, that the state of our overall health is reflected on our hair and skin. What you put in to your body will make big difference,  if you are dehydrated your hair and skin will be dry and lackluster.  Ensuring that your body receives  the vital nutrients is not only important for your health but it will reflect on the outside.

Moisturizing Natural Hair
This is by far the most challenging type of hair to keep moisturized; because of the way our hair grows it makes it difficult for the body’s natural oils to travel to the ends of the hair.  Natural hair needs constant moisture, with the best source of moisture  being WATER.
I moisturize my hair at least twice a week I use the LCO method and a good moisturizer during the week.
LCO Method
I find this method to be effective for sealing  in moisturize after I deep conditioning my hair. The basic premise of this method is Liquid - Cream – Oil. The Liquid part for me is my wet hair after I have rinsed my conditioner off, I follow this with leave-in Conditioner, the most crucial part of this method  for me is sealing all this with an  Oil. I like to use a butter, as I feel that it effectively seals all that “goodness” into my hair, but if you hair is not as thick or as coarse as mine an oil might be a better option for you.  I have tried the LOC method but I felt that my leave-in conditioner was not effective on top of a thick butter.
I do not find it necessary to do LCO method in-between wash-days as I find it time consuming, I prefer to use a good water based moisturizer during the week.  I especially like moisturizers that contain conditioning agents, as that means that my hair is getting the conditioning proportion without having to go through the whole LCO process.
Consistency and Protection
I think when it comes to the human body being consistent is absolutely key,  whether it’s with regards to your skin or exercise, you have to ensure that you follow through to get the best results. Be consistent with your deep-conditioning treatments, protect your hair at night and from the elements.  When it is hot I wear wigs or doeks, when it is cold I prefer to have my hair in a protective style so that my ends are protected and the dry air is not “sucking” all the moisture out of my hair. When your hair is happy breakage will be at a minimal and you will be able retain length.

Do you have any moisturizing tips? Do you use leave-in conditioners if so which ones?
