DeToxing your Scalp
scalp care

I am sure you all know how great a detox can be for your body, especially with "Bikini Season" around the corner. Detoxing your body gets rid of harmful toxins, boosts your metabolism and it can help you lose some of those unwanted kilos gained during winter. But, did you know that you could also Detox your Scalp? When I first came across this I was intrigued by the notion; so I started researching it, and the more I researched the more it made sense.
I know it sounds like another crazy natural hair routine, but let me explain why it makes sense. Your scalp is made up of skin, skin renews itself regularly, yes it naturally sheds on its own but most times your have to exfoliate. I exfoliate the skin on my face at least 3 times a week. So it made sense to also adopt this on my scalp.
Consider this
Your hair is actually dead and in order to promote growth you must ensure that your scalp is healthy. We spend a lot of time applying products on to our hair and inevitably some of those products end up on our scalp. Can you image what is going on, on your scalp; your skin is shedding, the body's natural oils (sebum) is on the scalp, residual of your deep condition, styling gel, oil and leave in conditioner all collecting on the surface of your skin. Add to all this some of us still "base" our scalps with JBCO or hair food. How is your scalp supposed to stay healthy with all this happening it.
Detoxing 101
Just as you exfoliate your face and body so must your exfoliate your scalp. However, you must take care not to cause damage to your hair. Of course I searched the internet for methods on detoxing my scalp, most of them came up with Baking Soda. As many of you know, I do not use baking soda on my body. So I had to find alternatives to baking soda and one of my favorite mixes was, ground Cinnamon and Olive oil. Both of these ingredients have antioxidants and restorative properties. Click here to see Why I don't use Baking Soda
Method
I ground my Cinnamon into a powder and mixed 1 Tablespoon of the powder to 2 Tablespoons of Olive oil I also added a couple of drops of Tea Tree Essential Oil. I massaged this mixture directly on to my scalp very gently so as not to break my hair, as with any food mixes you might start craving food in this case I wanted a Cinnabon so bad. Once you are satisfied with the massaging, shampoo your hair as you normally would, condition and style. Remember that though this an excellent way to stimulate your follicles and get rid of unwanted build up moderation is key, I use this method once a month when I clarify my hair. I also used a Bentonite Clay mix with great success.
Results so Far
Look I haven't seen dramatic hair growth, as my hair grows steadily in general. The benefit for me has been very minimal breakage since dyeing my hair Ash Blonde my hair structure was compromised, because of the bleach. I actually expected my hair to break but, I haven't experienced any abnormal breakage since incorporating this method with my other treatments.
Did you know that you could detox your scalp? Have you tried it? What mixture did you use? Remember if you found this article helpful please share it with your friends!
